Discussion - Do you use tools to monitor your progress, such as progress meters, word counters, spreadsheets?

I have not used any tools to monitor my progress, except within a particular piece where I check the word count (though I don't even do that if word count is not something I need to worry about in a story or chapter). However, I am wondering if keeping track of word count with a progress meter or a spreadsheet might help me be more productive or help tip the balance when I am waffling between playing a computer game and spending time writing!

This is where I am today, in fact. Been thinking hard on a story I need to wrap for a deadline, but ... Steam sale. x_X

I've thought about my fic but so far haven't done anything. I ended up being sociable on my day off.

I have a spreadsheet that I got from another to track my word count throughout the year and for my WIP Let Me Fade I have a word file with a 5x5 table for the word counts of each chapter so that I can update my headers when it is eventually finished

I'm writing full-time now, so I have a spreadsheet that's divided for original fic, fanfic, blog posts, etc. I did well tracking myself in June -- and also writing, come to think of it. July was a month-long headache and the tracking fell by the wayside, but I'm managing quite well for August and I hope to do just as well for September. Ideally I'd write a few hundred words every week day, but what with life being life... still, I find the accountability helpful. And it's quite encouraging to look at all the columns of things I did do, when I'm feeling down.
