Discussion - What part do maps play in your writing?  Are they necessary to forming your story?  Part of research?  Do you ever draw maps as a way to help you plan your story?

I do not include maps with my stories, but I do use them as part of research -- my main fandom has a lot of good maps available that really help plan my fic, and since my characters travel a lot, they are a necessary part of research and planning. I may have drawn a map or two myself to help me get a feel for things, but I usually rely on other people's maps.
