Discussion: explaining fan fic. Do you ever find yourself in situations where you have to explain to someone what fan fic is? Is it easy or difficult to explain?

Today I found myself trying, and quite possibly failing to explain fan fic to one of my friends. She mentioned that her daughter has started reading fic and was a little worried in case it wasn't a good thing for her. I assured that it was a good thing and I also showed her a couple of examples but I think that part wasn't quite clear. I know she'll ask again if she's still unsure.

Some writing today, not as much as I'd like and I've been hit by a nasty sore throat that is currently zapping what little energy and motivation I have just now.

I make a point of never being in a situation where I have to explain what fanfic is. I have been secretive about it since I first got involved in it.
