Discussion: finding the right word. When you're stuck for a specific word, how do you look for it? Dictionary and thesaurus? Ask friends? Use a placeholder? Something else?

I had this very problem recently. I couldn't find the word I was wanting to use in either Oxford or ACE Spelling and in the end I asked my circle and got it.

Although I'm really needing my bed just now, I'm attempting to get a pinch hit finished before deadline and thankfully it's around 300 words shy of the minimum word count.

When stuck for a word, I will do a search using a thesaurus or dictionary, then I'll put a placeholder in until I can spend more time with it (inserting the word that seems to be close but not quite right to remind me what I am looking for). If the online thesaurus fails, I have a big fat Roget's in dictionary form, and that will usually help me find the right word.
