Discussion: canon review. What things do you look for? Do you have something specific to check?

I still have 15th to 21st and 29th to 4th available for hosting check ins, if you can help out all just let me know.

I'm chipping away at the WIP I'm trying to finish. Got some new words written -- looks like I have one more section/chapter and then editing the ending which is already written. I need to redo it a bit based on some canon review I did recently.

Most of the time, I'm looking for something specific when I do canon review, to see if an idea will hold up or if something I'm remembering actually happened. I might also check for more general things if I am trying to get a feel for a character or a setting.

[first time commenter, hi!]

I've been busy with life unfortunately so I haven't been able to get writing done lately but I had to comment because I do enjoy canon reviewing. I try to rewatch/reread the entire canon before starting a larger fanfic project and if needed I look up character lines to help correct my tone in dialogue.

I also try to take notes on the show's timeline and characters while reviewing so that if more in-depth information is needed I know exactly which episodes/chapters to check. A rewatch for canon reviewing is quite different from a rewatch for leisure to me.

EDIT: Another thing I enjoy with canon reviewing is seeing how different adaptations fit together and then picking and choosing how this works with my fanfic. This one is more relevant in anime fandoms where you have the anime and the manga and sometimes even other media and I do play with it in my fanfic.

It turns into a question of knowing the rules enough to break them well.

Blargh, this entire week has been remarkably unproductive. Feels like time is escaping me even more than it normally does. Still planning on 'fics when I can, though.

For canon review, I usually only have to look at a wiki, but I occasionally rewatch episodes, replay part of the game, etc.
