Three words or less about your fic!

Today's discussion topic: WIPs! The fanfic flamingo has something to say on the subject.

Do you like to post your fics as WIPs or do you prefer to wait until you have completed the fic before you post it? Or do you ever only write one-shots?

My mind has been all over the place lately so no updates, but I usually write one-shots because my long-story crafting abilities are still pretty non-existent. I can write long stuff, but turning that stuff into a coherent entity is another thing. :P I will keep trying though! But yeah, no posting for me until the whole story is done.

I did some writing & some editing & I may have posted some anon comment fic. But I may not have. About 800 words on a current WIP. I wish the story looked like it was going to be shorter, though! I started off writing fic that was always under 1000 words, & while I've expanded my range (longest story about 4k, I think, ahahaha), I think it's... still expanding? & I kind of like being able to bang out a story & not have it be a huge deal to edit or get betaed (b/c it's not that long, I mean). & just... to get the story out of my head & published already. The WIP I worked on today isn't even that long--it's probably about 2k--but it's going to be longer than I wanted it to be. & I just want it DONE ALREADY.

The WIP-posting thing then isn't an issue for me so far, but... it might become an issue? I think I would probably post only when the whole thing was done, though, out of fear of writing myself into a corner or just abandoning the whole thing before it's done.

I have only done one-shots so far, but I have written several stories that were--not part of a series, really, but in the same universe/set of headcanon. Linked stories, maybe? I think if my brain was organized differently they might be chapter fic, but they don't seem to come out quite that way.

Alas, I have not gotten any more writing done today; other things interfered. There's still time yet, though, so maybe before I sleep I'll be able to give a better update!

I have several stories that are WIPs, one of them exceedingly long. I imagine my readers might be thinking just what the Flamingo says at times since it's been so long between chapters in most cases, lol! Even so, I post a chapter at a time to WIPs, and don't wait. If I'm keeping up properly, I do try to wait to post a chapter until I know I have another one or two up my sleeve, so it's not so long between.

I finally got started on my challenge fic/chapter for this month. I managed a few paragraphs, but that's about it. Unfortunately, it's for a fandom with which my interest is somewhat waning. :( But I have to write it as it's part of a round robin thing and I said I'd would.

What I like to do is write really awesome stories--not too short, not too long and then post them chapter by chapter--but only after they're finished.

Does that happen? No, sadly.

Mostly I write one shots that are between 1 and 3K and post them whole.

5000 words today! *ded of shock*

I have a couple WIPs that I'm posting as I go and I hate it. The past couple stories I posted, I finished first, then posted and I was so much happier. I was able to giggle at reviews going "fools! That's not what's going to happen at all!" rather than doubting what I've planned or feeling like I should change it if someone guesses correctly.

I think readers are also a lot more likely to read a fic as its being posted if they've got assurance that it's finished and will be posted regularly. I tend to avoid WIPs, because just like the brilliant fanfic flamingo says, I forget what happened and usually have no desire to read the previous 96 parts again.

It was a lot more common for me when I first started writing. Someone would say something that I hadn't thought of and it would get me worrying if I was wrong for not including it, or this or that. Or if someone came up with something that I had thought of, would they think I had stolen their idea. I don't find it as worrisome anymore, but it still happens.

I got about 800 words of fic done and finished the scene I was working on. Progress! :D I might actually stop for a while though and just print it all off for an edit. I haven't done that yet since I did a rewrite and it might help me work out if there are any gaping plot holes. I find it useful to do every now and then or you get stuck.

I used to post serial fics/WIPs chapter by chapter as I wrote them, but I can't say I ever finished any of them. So I'm trying to get my latest one finished before I start posting it, just for a change. I've actually done more one-shots lately, though I've got a growing collection of universes with separate but related fics that sort of form a coherent story. But it's more long fiction/short stories, one shots and novella-type things now.

For the fic I'm working on this month (Hikaru no Go), I'm glad I got the beginning out there already, as I got good reactions, which I found really encouraging (I wasn't sure that an OC narrator would go down well (fic beginning here). On the other hand, I really want to make sure Ive got the next chapters properly worked out, as I don't want to go up a blind alley. I know exactly where I'm going but I've just go to map out the route.

I do like WIPs because I find that there's more interaction with readers but the danger is in getting stuck or lost or scared (as I did with another fic for nearly a year).

I wrote!

I did not write on my ficathon story - oh my gosh I need way more sleep - but I wrote. I wrote a drabble! (Which is a thing I was slightly worried about still being able to do, after that massive brain-blort what was my not!NaNo.) It is a DS9 drabble, and may well be Not Worth Publishing, for I have spent the last several days visiting my family and should really not try to write angst at any time but especially not then... but it is a drabble. And I wrote it. And the concept, at least, is good, whether I wind up using it for something else or what.

*should really go to sleep nowwwwwww*
