Planning. A weekend is coming, and I need it. -_- As for books, On Writing by Stephen King is my go-to.

I find myself reading a lot of screenwriting books, even though I write short stories and *cough* attempt novels. They have helped me a lot with story structure and theme development. Some of my favorites are Memo from the Story Department by Christopher Vogler and David McKenna, and The Anatomy of Story by John Truby. For encouragement, I turn to Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird.

A book on writing that I find encouraging (though it doesn't have all that many pointers) is Terry Brooks' Sometimes the Magic Works -- Lessons from a Writing Life.
