Any special methods for organizing a fic? Outlines? Mind maps? The Snowflake Method?

Today was Tuesday, which in my world means it was way too crazy and busy to even think about writing! So nothing new happened.

I'm a fiend about organizing things chronologically, in particular my outlines. They are very detailed and arranged according to "day" for many of the WIPs I'm working on. Sometimes a single day will take chapters as I deal with what everyone and their brother are up to, but it's all chronological.

The Snowflake Method looks interesting, though. *bookmarks the link*

I posted today, though LJ is acting up and that makes me sad. I think I'll also attempt to write a bit when I'm done posting here. But I'm on vacation, so I don't expect much.

Organize? Pish! That's for the weak! I did an outline once. And make some notes about things I want to have happen. Other than that, I don't do much organizing.

Just posted my [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest fic! :D It was fun trying to post it while LJ was down, though, but it's done. Feels good to get it out there at last. :D I had the beta'd copy back last night and there wasn't much to change, just some typos and such. So once I'd given it one more read-through, it was posted. :D

Now I can concentrate on finishing my AU big bang fic. I'm at 13k? But I am getting more structure in there! I have a Bad Guy! (...well, relatively speaking, he's the Bad Guy. Depends whose side you're on. :P)

And, um, I really don't do a lot of organising. Though. Copying everything into yWriter and shifting scenes around counts, I suppose. And I sometimes mark scenes that need to move when editing by hand if I spot something that's in the wrong place. Other than that, I don't really outline or organise, I just write and hope it mostly sorts itself out. XD

Work was really stressful yesterday so I didn't have the energy to write anything, booooo. I don't really know if this will change this week, unfortunately. :(

Most of my fics are short enough to not need a special method of organization, heh. I like the idea of mind maps, though -- I've used them for a few other things before.

I wrote 1500 words today, fleshing out the details. My beta encouraged me that the longer wip had hope to grow to 20 or even 25K. I hope I don't let her down.

I don't really organize. I tried outlines but the story always went out of my control. But snowflake method seems to be interesting.

Urgh. I've got absolutely nothing done for the last couple of days. However it's my day off today so I plan on spending the evening bashing out the rest of the details for my big band and hopefully getting some words in.

I've only recently started writing fics that need organising but I've been using outlines, although looking at the snowflake method (thanks for the link btw) I use a few things from there.

Let's see...I worked with my CP over the phone to go over some of her story points. Then I edited/revised a piece of original fiction, trying to fill out the story a bit and get it past shorty story classification into novelette status (7500 to 17500 words). I'm up to 5810 words. --Just to be clear these are not all new words. This story was written several years ago and published in an anthology and had to be short short. The rights have reverted back to me so I'm trying to add in a lot of the description and internal narrative I originally cut so that I can publish it. New words added so far is about 600 over the last several days.

I did not work on my June challenge fic though. But it's almost done so I'm not fretting. Too much. ;P

As for organizing a fic. When I get an idea I just open a doc and start typing. Mostly my stories are short and I don't need grand outlines, mind maps, or anything else to keep my thoughts organized. Occasionally I'll do some notes about GMC - that's Goal, Motivation, Conflict -- for my main character/s if the story decides to go too long. But I've found that I'm a pantser and if I put too much of my ideas on the page then I find I'm no longer interested in actually writing the story since I know what happens. :)

Otherwise, organizing, I just have a fic folder, with subfolders for fandom or original story and then the story docs in those folders. And everything is in that folder: copies of the story, deleted scenes doc, my GMC, any notes or ideas, docs with research information, etc...

I chattered with my mum about my MaNoWriMo novel and started getting excited about it again! Just in time for PicoWriMo's July mini-round, which I'm hoping to use to start the MASSIVE REWRITE this thing needs. :D

A late comment, but on this day I did get a new start for a fic I've been trying to make happen for several months now and I think I know how I want to proceed with it now. All I have to do now is to start working on it and not stumble on the first thing that looks like trouble.

I do outlines sometimes and usually they're useful too, but I need to work on my organizing methods since I don't have many in use now and I think my brain genuinely needs them. I don't think mind maps or similar things would work for me though; they just failed to work for me on any level back with schoolwork and I don't think they'll work any better with writing in general.

Also late comment, but I did a little bit of writing stuff here and there despite a busy day yesterday. Wrote around 600 words and actually got a chapter finished for my WIP and talked to my friend a bit over the dilemma of my second help_japan fic (I REALLY need to sit down and think about that story eventually. ._.). He offered to help me with it once I think more over it and I'll probably brainstorm with him later tonight or tomorrow.

As for organizing, I do a bit of outline and write down some details for future scenes for my longer works, but that's about it. Half the time my stories stray away from the outlines, haha. The Snowflake idea sounds interesting, but not sure if that's for me because I tend to always change my mind over how I want scenes to be done.

Wrote 500 words for big bang 1, edited them, ended up with 351. Not as horrible as it sounds since I feel like the draft is aaaaamost ready for beta.

As for organizing a fic, I'd usually do a separate doc that I'll label "Name of fic NOTES". The story is broken into scenes with one or two lines describing the action. That way, I can always look at what I have to tackle next, etc.

An update on this -- I got a chance to look at my latest chapter for my Big Bang this morning, and realized one of my characters was slightly out of character, so in fixing that, I gained 300 new words. Nice, considering I didn't expect there to be anything even closely resembling a word count today. ;-)
