[personal profile] linaewen posting in [community profile] writethisfanfic
Hello on Saturday!  What kind of a writing day has it been so far today -- or if today hasn't gotten going yet, how did you fare yesterday?

       - I thought about my fic once or twice
       - I wrote
       - I did some planning and/or research
       - I edited
       - I've sent my fic off to my beta
       - I posted today!
       - I'm taking a break
       - I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment

Saturday Discussion - Today is a good day for talking about general writing topics or posting snippets of what you are currently working on.  Feel free to share what you are working on, or whatever is on your mind with your writing today!

No writing yet today, but [community profile] fandom_stocking is nearly done so I am hugely relieved and excited to move onto other projects (uh, including the chapter fic I started as a gift for one recipient there).

In addition to my own writing, I'll be beta-reading an old friend's latest bit of original fiction. We met back in the late 90's during the height of Xena fandom, even got to meet IRL at a convention, and it's wonderful to still have someone around who hasn't been driven off by my incessant perfectionism and rampant incorrectness.

Here's the opening paragraphs of the current WIP. X-Men movieverse, Rogue POV.

Most teenage girls have a hard enough time dealing with their own issues. Let alone anyone else's.

So.

Take those problems, and everything else. The good and the bad, the sum total of whatever intangibles that make a person who they are. Put all of that inside your head, right along with your own developing and immature self, and you already have a recipe for catastrophe. Add in the fact that this person -- a mutant who kidnapped you in furtherance of his evil scheme for world domination, in an act of revenge against the human race -- is a gay man in his late sixties who has definitely, as they say, been around the block a few times. Now sprinkle on top yet another personality; also male, rabidly heterosexual, of indeterminate age but likely two, even three times as old as the first unwanted occupant. Except this one belongs to someone for whom you already had just a bit of a crush, even before he literally became a part of your soul. Meanwhile, back in the world outside your head, said actual person not only sees you as a child to be protected but spends most of his time well away from your new home, exploring his own haunted past that lies shrouded in mystery. And the crowning glory, of course, is the problem that caused almost all of these others in the first place: Your own mutated DNA, expressing itself in potentially lethal form for anyone who dares come in contact with your bare skin, absorbing the very essence of their life.

Marie can't bring herself to call it a power. By every definition, it's nothing but a curse.

Sleep prevailed yesterday, and I was able to do a spot of writing this morning. Success, but I now need to take a break and recharge my brain (i.e. play video games and relax; I swear I forget how to relax sometimes).

I wrote for 20 minutes! It went pretty smoothly, I am pleased with it. Too bad I can't keep going on it since I'm swamped at work this afternoon. :(

Finally had a break-through! I used a piece of advice that I read if you're stuck look for the wrong turn somewhere back in the story. I scoured my work and couldn't find it, then I looked at the start of the chapter I was stuck in, there it was the very first sentences, I'd gone in a direction that really wasn't working. Once I righted the direction words started to flow again.

Snippet:
"Frigid Russian air surrounding pulling skin taut, prickling every breath; eyes watered with cold-pulled tears, the room’s stale odor filling nostrils. Distant sense of wetness, shins straddling Bucky, kneeling at the sink, spilled water dampening their legs. All sensations giving way to Steve’s singular focus, heat spreading fiber to fiber, coursing through his body burning hotter at each point of contact holding Bucky possessive. Skin matching metal, arm wrapping his waist, groin pressed to ass, back tight held to his chest. Their mouths close flirting the kiss her laugh had interrupted."

Did things of the writing variety today off and on.

I'm doing some researching of the Silmarillion world that Tolkien wrote, trying to figure out what things I want to reference in a fic and what things I'll likely not use. Also did a job application today so that took a bit of time to do.
