Hello on Thursday! What kind of a writing day has it been so far today -- or if today hasn't gotten going yet, how did you fare yesterday?
- I thought about my fic once or twice
- I wrote
- I did some planning and/or research
- I edited
- I've sent my fic off to my beta
- I posted today!
- I'm taking a break
- I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment
Thursday Discussion: Many of us have a favorite character we like to feature in our writing. Do you ever read other stories written involving that character (if there are any), or do you try to keep yourself free of other people's views of your character?

Date: Thursday, March 7th, 2019 15:24 (UTC)I will sometimes read fic that involves my favorite character/characters if I am familiar with the author and how they treat the character, but I'm not opposed to reading fic that has a totally different view, either. The main thing I used worry about in reading other views of my character was that it might somehow influence my writing plan, but I don't really worry about that anymore.

Date: Thursday, March 7th, 2019 16:36 (UTC)I have a favorite character for each fandom, but not one overall, really—I am very multi-fandom-ish. I will read anything and everything with my favorite characters in it, and happily let other people's views influence mine, as I'll read them and think "does this really feel right or not" and then hold onto the ones that feel in-character. I have a hard time checking my own characters' characterization, so I actually find that very helpful, to pull from others to help me make sure I've got them right and am not just writing them the way I feel like in my head (which often involves making them less like themselves and more like either me or some sort of character in my mind). In many cases, I find it hard to write a character until I've read a bunch of fics with them in it and can use that to help me build a composite sense of the character in my head!

Date: Thursday, March 7th, 2019 16:37 (UTC)I'm usually in the unenviable position of writing the characters nobody else gives a shit about, so even if I wanted to read fic about them -- and I do, I really do -- there usually isn't any. You know the saying, "you aren't really desperate for fic until you're staring down a blank page".
Outside of a few stark exceptions, I usually enjoy seeing the ways other people interprete the characters I like writing, though. I'm attracted to characters based on the broad beats of their personality, and it's always fun seeing how writers go about squaring the circle of why they act like that -- or just reading about them acting like the shallow version of themselves b/c hey, that's the version I like :D

Date: Friday, March 8th, 2019 02:39 (UTC)I am open-minded when it comes to other views of my favorite characters. No one is going to interpret any one character the same way, so I do not mind seeing how other people write my favorites.
