Discussion: Do you prefer to handwrite your fic or do you type?

I am so excited! Last night I added ~150 words to the Rookie Blue WIP I'd been working on - and this morning I woke up to the person who offered to be my alpha reader actually getting to it! They left me wonderful comments, caught overused words, improved flow, and were extremely helpful as to what felt like the characters or not. I'm just grinning like mad because I'm almost to where I can write more on it - and they're looking forward to reading it! :D :D :D

Type only. I could never handwrite fic - my brain goes faster than I type sometimes, I'd be so frustrated if I were handwriting, my mind would constantly be halted on the next sentence I wanted waiting for my hand to catch up…

I've had a hard time writing lately, been too stressed by life, but today I did manage to write about 350 words on something I started several weeks ago. So yay. \o/ I also beta-read a fic for a friend and sent it back.

For the last couple of years, I've been typing my fics, but before that I used to always carry with me a notebook and a pen so I could write wherever I was. At that time, I felt like it was easier to write by hand and then type it up. These days, I don't feel like that at all, and I have no idea why this changed. ;)

I write after work, so I'll be adding to my WIP chapter tonight. I write the chapters on my computer but use notebooks to plot out chapters, I draw timelines, diagrams, lists, by hand in those notebooks. I also use a virtual corkboard on my laptop. It's a great resource. I can pin research, pictures, ideas, snippets all on a series of cork boards. A virtual storyboard for each chapter. It's better than bookmarking pages, I can cut and paste what I need on the boards.

I usually handwrite my first draft of a fic, unless I get the idea while I happen to be on my laptop and have no notebooks close by! I find it easier to get something out that way--there's no other open tabs to distract me, and my overly affectionate cat is less likely to accidentally erase large chunks of my writing by walking across a notebook. (Keyboards are a cat magnet.)

The process of typing it up serves as an easy way to edit, too, because just the process of going back over it means I'll catch run-on sentences, fix wording, and smooth over places where I used the same phrase to describe the same action twice in one paragraph. (Guess what I found in my latest handwritten draft today...)

I've done both, currently though I am writing up my fics by typing.

I have lots of ideas and writing projects started, but Life has been annoying lately, so I'm having trouble focusing on writing. Here's hoping I can buckle down and get back to work!

I used to do my preliminary writing by hand so I could do it wherever I happened to be, but now I compose much better when I type. I still scribble notes by hand sometimes, but the story writing happens on my keyboard.
