Sometimes the writing happens right away, other times it doesn't so it varies often for me with new fandoms.

The more I read, the more I'm able to use the patterns of how the chars are written to get a good sense for who has them down right and who doesn't, and focus on synching my characterization with the best writers'. (Characterization is tricky for me.) Typically the first fic in a fandom might be a drabble or double drabble, something short - and it's not often the best, but it just sort of gets me started. Dipping my toes in, so to speak.
