WIP challenge - day 5 check-in!

I took all my snippety bits from last month's 750 Words & saved them as separate documents. Some of them are worth working on, which I am relieved to see!

I also wrote more snippets today -- even if they're not usable as fics on their own, the details & dialogue might get folded into other fics. When I'm feeling stuck I like to pull up the mundane_bingo prompt masterlist & just pick a few of them to write drabbles about.

I'm not at the stage where I need a beta yet -- or rather I'm waiting for beta comments on one fic, & I'm not at the beta point for anything else. Depending on time/energy I am often happy to do SPAG betas (since I almost never know other people's fandoms) for other folks if they need one!

I finally got some writing done! Getting my concentration together was a little bit hard (lots of distractions), but got an entire little 2200 word fic done and posted. (Yay me!)

Still no forward motion on the 4-chapter WIP, though. That little critter just wants to lie there sleeping, and I continue to feel bad about it not getting finished. I'm going to take a long look at it this weekend, but I don't know that that will accomplish anything. The right pieces just aren't falling together.

But the good news is, it's FRIDAY!

Hopefully you just need to give your brain a bit of a break from the longer WIP & maybe then something will stir loose & inspire you to go back to it?

I got a little writing in this am on the HP fic, and I've been working on revisions on a young adult romance.

No struggles or anything, just too much going at home right now, so my writing time is limited to early morning.

Next snippet:

Narcissa returned to Grimmauld Place rather late in the afternoon after submitting herself to questioning by the auror department. She apparated into the kitchen to check on Kreacher and the status of the evening meal. The old house elf had a lovely cottage pie bubbling in the oven.

“Kreacher, I wish you’d let me find some new house elves to help care for the house. You deserve to supervise, not do the work yourself.”

She’d offered several times and his answer was always the same.

“Aye, Mistress Cissy. Kreacher will think about it and talk to Master Potter.”

“Very well, Kreacher, I’m going to shower before tea.” Perhaps she’d talk to Master Potter herself. She’d been quite surprised to discover Kreacher’s acceptance of and warmth toward Harry. He’d been devoted to Aunt Walburga and equally disdainful of Sirius after his defection from the most notable house of Black. For Kreacher to have transferred his allegiance to Harry was practically a miracle and she wondered what had transpired to bring it about.

Narcissa rounded the landing on the ground floor and was halfway up the stairs to the first floor when she stopped in her tracks. Raised and angry voices floated from above. Well, once angry voice, a young lady’s, and Harry’s modulated, calmer voice came from the drawing room on the first floor.

“Draco’s mother? You've got to be kidding me? After everything that weasel ever did to you? Her sister tried to kill me.”

Narcissa winced, but didn't recognize the voice. She'd be tainted by everything everyone in her family had ever done, even is she herself had no part in it. She sighed.

“But, Ginny, she didn’t. And Mrs. Malfoy is not responsible for what her sister did,” said Harry. “Everybody deserves a second chance if they ask, and she asked.”

Ah, Ginny Weasley then. Harry’s girlfriend. Draco had been quite vocal in his contempt for both Harry and Ginny and even more so of them together.

“And you just agreed?”

There was no verbal response, so he must have nodded.

“I can’t believe it. You have a woman old enough to be your mother living in your house.”

“And?”

“Do you know how it looks? What people might think?” asked Ginny, incredulously.

Narcissa hadn’t thought of how that might be perceived. She suddenly felt bad for putting Harry in that position. She’d talk to him about later, in private.

“Nobody knows she’s staying here but Hermione and you. I don’t think she’s going around telling everyone that she’s living here. Mr. Malfoy would go barmy.”

“Why isn’t she living at home at Malfoy Manor?”

“I didn’t ask.”

“Well, why not? Surely you have a right to know, if she’s staying here.”

“Maybe so, but I don’t have a need to know. It’s her business.”

Gratitude and appreciation flowed through Narcissa for young Harry, even though she had given him a few reasons, just not the complete picture.

“Ginny, you’re not jealous are you?”

Harry yelped and Narcissa smiled. Young Miss Weasley had a temper to match her fiery mane. Harry definitely had his hands full.

“What? Why would I be jealous of her?”

“Because . . . she lives in my house and you don’t.”

Narcissa heard the teasing tone in his voice. Another yelp was followed by low murmurings and then silence.

Oh actually at some point I could use a Brit Picker, I guess is what you call 'em.

I'm obviously American and I really want my HP fic, which is populated by BRITS, to sound authentic.

FYI, right now, I've only got about three full chapters and some other random scenes, and I really don't know how long the fic is going to be or how long it's going to take to write so if that's too ambiguous, no worries, it doesn't have to be long term.

But I'd love some help and hopefully I'll pick up some things along the way. If anyone is game just PM me. Thanks a bunch.

Good luck w/your fic!! Sounds like you've got a good start -- & hopefully you can find someone to Britpick it for you. (I live over here & have for 3 years, but I'm from the US & while I can pick out some obvious Americanisms, often I find that I just muddle everything together instead... >_< )

I was looking at my WIP earlier today. I've hit a crucial bit in developing the two protagonists' rather strange relationship, and I'm not sure how to proceed. I guess until I suss that bit out I'll be channeling energies into smaller stories.

Maybe working on the smaller stories will let your brain keep puzzling out the relationship issue in the background, & then you'll be able to proceed from there. Good luck!

I believe this week can be summed up as URGH. A few wee bits and bobs of snippets done and I've organised my outline a bit more but I just have no energy or enthusiasm for writing at the moment. I'm hoping the writing session tomorrow will help with that.

Oh, I hate being in a slump like that. :/ It's good that you were able to get a few snippets done here & there! I hope the session tomorrow will help (BTW, sorry I missed you leaving the session last week -- somehow the chat notifications escaped my notice so by the time I saw your comments you'd already left!).

Writing's been better again today and the tram turns out to be a perfect place for proof-reading. I'm at 1,2k now and the fic will probably grow to just under 2k. That should be doable by tomorrow.

In general, I'm rather unsure about the porn battle fill, though. It's probably a combination of writing in the fandom for the first time and not having a lot of time to settle in that makes it feel a bit unround. Weirdly enough, I'm feeling clumsy with sentence construction too, though maybe that's just the unfamiliarity with the protagonist's voice? Idk.

If anyone here is familiar with Dark Angel, I would very very much appreciate a second pair of critical eyes. Or actually, even someone without canon knowledge just pointing me to the sentences that don't work so well would be great and helpful. *hopes* I can bribe with delicious muffin recipes?

I've given it a quick look! I put comments in red (cuz I don't think Google Docs has anything like Track Changes, am I right?). Thanks for letting me have a look at it -- I liked it a lot! I thought it was v. atmospheric (despite knowing zero about the canon) & also I really liked the way you wrote about being on fire w/sexual need. (The line about the last two batteries, bwahahahaha -- that IS a true favor indeed!)

Finally got my AU big bang fic done. 8D Considering I really only had two days to rewrite half of it and kick it into shape, I'm pretty happy with that. Now I can work on my kinked big bang fic, which I haven't really touched for a while as I've been fixing my AU big bang fic. /priorities.

I haven't managed to finish any Porn Battle fics this time though. Boo. :( RL has eaten my Porning time, and I have a very busy weekend ahead of me. Oh well. There'll be another in six months. I can wait. Until then, I always have kink_bingo! :D

Haven't done much writing today though. Not in the mood. Plus, it's that time of the month. -_- I just want to lie on the sofa and watch DVDs all day. XD

I've not written a single word all week. I've just been taking a break -- partly from being worn out from my writing frenzy last month and partly due to RL, which is back at it again making me busy. Hopefully things will be back on track after the weekend!
