Discussion: prompts. Do you have a favourite kind of prompt to work from? Do you find them hard to work from?

My decision to break from habit and post an unfinished WIP ("The Devil, You Know"; Buffy/Dexter crossover, Dexter POV) seems to have had the desired result, in that the last few days have seen me coming up with a lot of new ideas to flesh out character, motivation, conflict and oh-yes-actual plot. Unexpectedly going out today for fresh air and sunshine, I hope to resume the writing this evening.

Haven't written prompts in a while. Some are harder than others. Would like to do more again, but am already having enough trouble finding hours in the day.

I'm at a conference this week and I'm having trouble finding time to write, but hopefully I'll get a chance soon.

I like various kinds of prompts but one kind that is fun but challenging is fixed- length fics.

I posted yesterday and today. I'll likely be catching up on life stuff for a few days before digging back into fan projects.

Prompts I tend to like scenarios or tropes a lot. Characters can be good sometimes as well, but I like things to be somewhat open so I can form an idea around the base of it.

I wrote! Things in my head are starting to move again! :-D This is reason for happiness.

I love all kinds of prompts, but the ones at kink memes seem to be the best fit for me, especially if today is any indication.

Other than editing one of my exchange fics last night (I think it was!), I've been dealing with life, with the occasional break. Work stuff - prep for the next school year, changing classrooms, what fun. Though I did read an absolutely amazing fic tonight as I added a few to my database, so yay.

I don't think I've ever written from prompts when an exchange wasn't involved, so - in those cases, the prompts come with fandom (and often characters/ships) attached, so it's hard to say. Really depends on the fandom/character/ship involved, and what the prompt is, whether it works or not. I don't think I could generalize, it's really that varying a situation! Some prompts in exchanges have been extremely successful; the Boxcar Children fic I wrote for Yuletide is a good example, as the recip asked for a modern version of the tale, and I could almost immediately see how it would unfold with post-apocalyptic themes, which either they or one of the other participants requesting Boxcar Children had prompted for (I forget which, now! I know my recip wanted a modern re-telling, so that was the prompt), so. Others, I can look at the prompts and still be stuck (though I've had quite a few with no prompts whatsoever, so there, it's just as well I usually only offer a fandom/char or fandom/ship combo with a general story idea in mind already!
