Discussion: What are your feelings on slash (male or female)? Do you read it? Do you write it? Can you explain what draws you to it, either reading or writing?

Date: Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 17:12 (UTC)For me slash is...I dunno. Just slash. It's just one of many genres of fan fiction. I'm not opposed to it, though I admit I don't read it much, and I've only tried to write it once. And even then it was actually a threesome, two men and one woman. But I never finished it. (Maybe one of these months.)
I'll read it when the story summary really piques my interest and I think that I can suspend my disbelief and truly buy into two characters who are portrayed as nothing but heterosexual taking part in a homosexual relationship. PWP slash does little for me. Of course there are characters whose portrayal does not exclude homosexual leanings, but still I prefer the slash relationship to make sense within the framework of the story.
Nothing really draws me to it, tbh. If I come across it in comms or fests or the like and it sounds interesting (see above) I'll check it out, but I don't go in search of it specifically.

Date: Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 20:18 (UTC)I somehow boosted my count by 600 or so just on editing. I found that Id miscalculated the original total though (lower that what I thought by a couple of thousand. Still, its the story thats the point, not the word count.
I continue to work with ywriter to bring things together. I seems to work well for my story, which is fairly straightforward. I want to test the program all the way though before I rave about it, but ut seems to be pretty good so far. Plenty of places to put things and interesting features like audio 'read back' built in.
On the slash. I like to read a bit of everything. I think my fic covers a bit of everything too. In the fandom there are a few people that either strongly dislike either M/M or strongly dislike M/F. As I write both (and in the same universe) its impossible to please everyone. Ive no idea how my F/F would be received, if I ever finish it.

Date: Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 22:32 (UTC)Anyhow, I spent a lot of today sorting through papers again, which involved finding random story notes and getting them down. I think ~500 words and editing so far?
...BUT WHAT ARE MY THOUGHTS ON YAOI? (Sorry, couldn't resist...)
I think my interest started simply because early on in my fannish existence, it was just easier to find more "good" slash fics. So at one point slash relationships were definitely my bias. Nowadays I'm much less shippy than I used to be, and my preferences are more varied in orientations. I view this as everything else in fic; if you can sell me that this character has x orientation and/or is in a relationship with y convincingly, I'll bite!
I've written m/m and f/m before and I might be writing homoromantic relationship in this one fic now (haven't decided yet, hahah). I've very recently dabbled my first two fandoms that lend well to femslash, so I'm hoping to check out more of that to see if the scene is really so different. Otherwise, lately I'm more into are gen and ace fics in my fandoms, which are pretty rare.

Date: Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 00:35 (UTC)As for slash...I have loved it as soon as I accidentally came across it. It's wonderful in the same way that raspberries are, the smell of fresh baked bread, or soft flannel sheets, or seeing a butterfly wander past, or having your favorite song come on the radio. It just is. :)

Date: Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 02:07 (UTC)Slash...that's a "no thank you" for me. I never have understood the appeal. So no, I don't read it, I don't write it, and I do often dearly wish that such a huge percentage of the fandom I'm in (Supernatural) didn't adore it so freaking much. They're so loud about their love of slash that the show's writers have jumped on the "Let's see how many slash innuendos we can hammer into every episode, because the fans love it!!" bandwagon.

Date: Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 07:14 (UTC)Slash (both M/M and F/F) I'm cool with, though it depends on the pairing. There are some that I quite while others I don't. The concept of slash isn't want draws me into the pairings, but moreso the interaction from the characters and if I feel they're compatible with one another. I have written one M/M and one F/F story, the M/M being moreso crack while the F/F one is actually a pairing I want to explore and see the end result of it.
