How's the fic coming along today, everyone?
For discussion: I happened upon a blog post today about writing that talked about what one's "brand" was as a writer. I kind of wrinkled my nose at the term with regards to fic writers. But what do you think you're known for, fic-wise? In other words, if someone knew a fic was by you, what might they expect from it? A specific pairing, something stylistic? How do you feel about that expectation? Would you rather be known for something else?

& how do you feel about all that?

In Natsume Yuujinchou fandom, er, I don't seem to see anyone writing OT3 fics but me. I don't think I have anything particularly stylistic I'm known for; it might be nice if I did though!

I have a femmeslash plot idea, but I keep feeling a bit appaled at myself over it and wondering whether fandom would feel the same. Still, Ive enough on my plate for the time being. I'm putting off all new ideas until October. Perhaps then I'll pluck up courage.

Date: Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 21:39 (UTC)Re brand--no idea. I probably write too little in too many fandoms to tell. I tend to think that many of my fics, if they aren't outright humour, have at least funny undertones, and I normally have an OTP per fandom that I exclusively write about, but I don't think there's anything outstanding. *shrugs* I don't really care.

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 05:57 (UTC)I don't think I care about my 'brand' (shudder) for its own sake, but it'd be nice if I had a strong enough style that I could be known for something, heh. I mean, I think I would take it as a compliment/reassurance.
branding...

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 02:50 (UTC)People who see a fic from me probably pretty much know that it's going to be about a specific character, as he's the one I write 95% of the time. I definitely don't mind if I'm branded that way -- it's my favorite character, after all. However, I do sometimes try to mix it up a bit, and write something different to surprise everyone! I have been told my style is rather Tolkienish, which works great when I'm writing LotR -- but it makes it harder when I'm trying to write something modern like Major!

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 05:59 (UTC)Hahaha re: Tolkienish style vs. Major! I think if I tried to write something in a fandom that was v. grand in tone like LOTR I would just fail utterly, so yay you for being able to do it.

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 03:33 (UTC)My brand is ... thinking man's pr0n. I'm not the queen of the BYFO sex scene (though I do surprise myself and my readers from time to time), but I like to think I've got character and motives nailed.

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 06:00 (UTC)& wooohooooooo for getting some more words down for the story that's been troubling you! You can always edit later, so yay for making the words come into existence!!!

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 04:42 (UTC)I have no idea what I'm known for -- I'm probably too inconsistent nowadays to have a discernible style? If anything, I think I'm the person that makes "that one weird typo", or maybe "the person who can't get past chapter three in her multi-parts". I'm working on both of those, honest. I guess I would like to be known as a person who writes sometimes sweet, but realistic friendships or maybe has decent prose with an amusing touch of snark.

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 06:02 (UTC)Yeah, I don't know if I'm really known for anything (except for particular pairings) either -- but snark would be nice to be known for! (One thing I'll never be known for is crack, because I can't write it at all...)

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 06:59 (UTC)I'm not sure what I'm known for. I think I'm known for able to write out plotty stories well and that I'm able to connect the events together nicley. I'm cool with that since I know plot isn't easy for everyone. Heck, sometimes I wonder how I'm able to figure out the plots of my stories when half the time I thing up stuff on the fly. XD

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 07:55 (UTC)Branding...I wouldn't know what I'm known for. Looking at what Ive posted so far, my writing tends to be gennish with a positive open ending and involves female characters more often than you see them in canon.

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 18:36 (UTC)Ha, me too! That's one of my favorite things about writing fic: the chance to bring out characters you love that are underloved in the source.
Yay for writing all those words yesterday!

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 09:39 (UTC)I don't think I have brand, at least I'm not aware of it if I do have one and it actually doesn't really bother me.

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 18:37 (UTC)I think I'd like to have a 'brand' just in that it'd be nice to be known for doing something well -- it would be kind of reassuring, hahahaha. (Er, one could also have a brand for doing things horribly, but I'm not even going to consider that. >_< )

Date: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 13:17 (UTC)I write mostly angsty gen (in fact, my LJ is billed as "The Cozy Den of Gen"), so I think that's what people come to me to find. And I don't mind that, because it's what I seek out to read.
