Hello on Wednesday! Sorry about missing yesterday, I was under the weather and did not do many things I meant to!
Anyway, how are things going in the world of fic today?
Did you write?
- Yes!
- No!
- Not yet!
If yes, what kind of writerly activity did you engage in? How do you feel about it?
If no, what were the obstacles/situations that affected your writerly pursuits? What will you do differently tomorrow to get more writing done?
If not yet, because the day hasn't gotten going yet, what kind of writing activity are you planning (or hoping) to accomplish?

Date: Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 13:02 (UTC)The past two days' writing has been devoted to one scene, which I'm hoping to finish tonight. It's a sex scene, which is always difficult for me (Is it interesting? Is it hot (if it's supposed to be)? Is it anatomically possible? Am I using words for body parts and acts that fit in with the style of the rest of the fic? etc.), but this time the difficulty is compounded because it's a sex scene that's actually important to the plot, which means all the usual questions plus making sure it does what I need it to do in terms of advancing the plot. I'd love to hear from other writers: Do you have any techniques that help you write sex scenes? What type of scenes do you find most difficult to write? Conversely, what kind of scenes do you find easiest to write? (My easy scenes are dialogue. Give me characters talking - especially if they're talking over a meal - and the words just come rushing out.)

I wouldn't call it a technique per se, but it's more like I like to have an idea of what exactly I want to convey in the writing. Meaning, the characters are engaging in some kind of sexual activity, okay, so... is this their first time doing whatever they're doing? is it something they like to do? (if the scene is a partnered one) are they nervous abt sharing this activity with the other character(s), etc.
Basically, I like to move a little past the mechanics of whatever is going on and more into how the POV!character is processing the scene via their senses. To me, that's what makes a scene feel hotter OR (sadly) fall flat. It's helpful and, imho, a good thing for the readers to know what the characters are feeling via touch, seeing, smell, taste, and hearing. Also, if it feels relevant, what they're thinking. Is the POV!character doing something that's a bit different from their usual (like multiple partner sex when they usually only get down with one person, adding a kink element when they're usually vanilla OR the opposite (a kinkster who is having vanilla sex).
Writing sex scenes can deffo be daunting regardless of them being vanilla sex or kink. I'm unsure if any of this has been helpful, but I hope it gives you food for thought.
