Discussion question--Do you beta read? If so, what are your strengths? Weaknesses?

Writing today was good -- I think. Nothing astonishing, but I'm also going through my exported 750 Words from September & October (so far) & pulling out all the bits from the same fandoms & sticking them into documents so I can work on them. I always like doing this -- b/c even if a lot of what I've written is crud, I'm always, w/o fail, pleasantly surprised by how much stuff I churned out that is worth working on.

I do beta! I'm good at noticing words or phrases that are repeated too often; I'm pretty good at grammar. & I'm good at slicing out excess verbiage. I'm less good at seeing big-picture stuff: how the overall plot moves, is paced, etc. ... these pretty much mirror my strengths/weaknesses w/writing my own fic, ha!

No writing today as of yet, though I might do a little more before going to bed. Funnily, I spent the day beta-reading. I only ever beta read for a very good friend - and she must like me a lot because I'm pretty sure I'm the worst at it. I'm just not good at figuring out which sentences actually need to be edited, and which might not hold up to my unreachable ideas of perfection, but are actually perfectly fine as they are. So yeah, the fic now looks like another text died on top of it :/

The writing today was kinda meh but I'm glad that I got some writing done. Started a rought draft of a fic I've been toying with for a while. I do need to finish the canon refresh first though and the ep is a hard one to watch because my shipper senses do no agree with certain things :)

I've done beta a couple of times in the past but I don't think I was very good at it :( I missed some errors with grammar and spelling. I am dyslexic so I do sometimes miss those things even with my own writing.

I am rereading something from Sunday to see if it runs smooth. It's anonymous, so in lieu of proper betaing I just let it sit a while and then reread it to see if I missed something important.

I used to do a fair bit of betaing, but I've gotten slack.

I think I'll call it good. I didn't actually write anything (yet), but I re-edited a couple of old chapters for posting and in the process discovered two tidbits I had written ages ago that support a conclusion/idea I came up with recently. The idea is for a change in direction of the plot later on in the story. So I wrote some notes on it! I'm also very much enjoying rereading my old chapters, and I think it's helping me get back in the mood for writing the chapter-that-has-been-half-written-for-a-year.

Yes, I do beta reading. I'm good with grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well a making awkward sentences sound better and make sense. Even though I don't always see my own frequent uses of a particular word or phrase, I can catch it in other people's work. I do a lot of copy editing in RL so I'm pretty much editing or correcting something written most every day of the week. It's more fun when it's fannish, though!

It's not, but I'm doing some beta work.

Um...just general beta stuff. Some grammar, some typos, some pacing. Nothing super fancy.

Was able to get 850 words of my Big Bang done and also finished the sixth chapter of it! A bit sub-par as I just want to get that last scene over it, but nothing like some editing should fix that. I wanted to also get some edits of the third chapter of my Big Bang done too, but due to suddenly having a shitty night unable to do that. -_- Perhaps I can be able to do that tomorrow morning before I have to go to work.

I do beta reading, but like a couple people I don't think I'm great at it. I'm not too good with dialogue and grammar, so I can't say much on that. I'm pretty good though pointing out awkward POV change, repetition of words and phrases in the writing, and plot.

I re-edited my complicated first scene and added 400w. I can see what my re-reader though was wrong with it, even though I haven't found the solution yet. Knowing that this scene will change a whole lot more because of what follows, I'm going to leave it as it is for the moment. Once Ive dealt with the later events, then the way though might become clearer.

Ive never beta read. I kind of feel that I'm not qualified yet, as far as fiction is concerned (though I re-read technical documents in RL all the time).

I'm extrememy grateful to my betas for the help and perspective they've given me. Its an essential step, particularly as comments are not traditionally a place for C&C.

But, on 'giving something back', I want to wait until I feel Ive posted enough fanfic myself to show a decent level of ability before I try to do this for someone else.
