Hello Everyone--I hope the first day of the work week has been going well for you.
How has your writing gone today??
~ Awesome!!
~ Good!
~ Meh--
~ Grrr...
~ Nevermind...
~ It's not. :/
Discussion question--Do you beta read? If so, what are your strengths? Weaknesses?

Date: Monday, October 24th, 2011 20:26 (UTC)I do beta! I'm good at noticing words or phrases that are repeated too often; I'm pretty good at grammar. & I'm good at slicing out excess verbiage. I'm less good at seeing big-picture stuff: how the overall plot moves, is paced, etc. ... these pretty much mirror my strengths/weaknesses w/writing my own fic, ha!

Date: Monday, October 24th, 2011 20:45 (UTC)I beta read as well. I'm a strong grammarian, speller, and punctuator and still working to improve my skills in those areas.
I'm also very good at word smithing and catching awkward word flow. Like littlebutfierce, I catch repetitous word usage too. I think I'm pretty good all the way around. For fandoms I'm really familiar with, I'm good at catching out-of-character-ness.
Actually I'm trying to improve all my editor skills, I'm sure I have weaknesses--probably lack of familiarity in a wider range of fiction genres would be the main one--but can't pull anything to mind right now.
My four critique partners think I'm the hardest critiquer of our group. :)

Date: Monday, October 24th, 2011 21:14 (UTC)I've done beta a couple of times in the past but I don't think I was very good at it :( I missed some errors with grammar and spelling. I am dyslexic so I do sometimes miss those things even with my own writing.

Date: Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 01:57 (UTC)Yes, I do beta reading. I'm good with grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well a making awkward sentences sound better and make sense. Even though I don't always see my own frequent uses of a particular word or phrase, I can catch it in other people's work. I do a lot of copy editing in RL so I'm pretty much editing or correcting something written most every day of the week. It's more fun when it's fannish, though!

Date: Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 02:12 (UTC)Um...just general beta stuff. Some grammar, some typos, some pacing. Nothing super fancy.

Date: Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 06:19 (UTC)I do beta reading, but like a couple people I don't think I'm great at it. I'm not too good with dialogue and grammar, so I can't say much on that. I'm pretty good though pointing out awkward POV change, repetition of words and phrases in the writing, and plot.

Date: Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 06:34 (UTC)Ive never beta read. I kind of feel that I'm not qualified yet, as far as fiction is concerned (though I re-read technical documents in RL all the time).
I'm extrememy grateful to my betas for the help and perspective they've given me. Its an essential step, particularly as comments are not traditionally a place for C&C.
But, on 'giving something back', I want to wait until I feel Ive posted enough fanfic myself to show a decent level of ability before I try to do this for someone else.
