Today's topic for discussion: I know some of us suffer from an over-abundance of bunnies sometimes. If that effects you, how do you pick which one to focus on?

I'm doing some editing on one fic that's been written for awhile for posting at Ao3. I'm also doing research for a couple of new pieces that I'm working on. I have a fairly free evening ahead of me, so I may get some writing time in as well later on.

When I have a lot of bunnies going, I tend to try picking the one that is due first, if it's part of a challenge or a prompt. Otherwise, I tend to spend time with whichever one is newer -- which is bad for my poor WIPs that have been around for awhile!

I think every writer must have folder(s) full of WiPs; it seems to be part of the process. I think I need to get better at focussing and prioritising, though. It would be nice to get more pieces finished and posted!

Currently, I have a Scrivener project called The Plotbunny Farm and I put all my ideas in there, sorted according to a sort of Venn Diagram process: when is it due, how close is it to being finished, and how much is it nagging me to get written.

I think of it in farming terms, with folders for Fallow Fields (old ideas that I can't bring myself to throw away yet), Seeds (bare-bones concepts), Seedlings (detailed concepts, with a couple of scenes written), the Current Crop (things I'm actively working on, or that are close to being finished, or being beta'd), and Last Year's Harvest for my finished, posted works.

I love this way of describing WIP folders! I have a similar set up, and this way of describing them fits perfectly. I also have a subfolder in Current Crop that's for those WIPs that have been neglected over the years, but I still get in there and tend them from time to time, and they still are producing fruit. ;-)

Most of the year, I'm doing exchanges or challenges of one sort or another, so I don't have to make decisions about which story to pursue. Right now, my decision about what to write is driven by wanting to qualify for Remix in a new fandom. Otherwise, I'd probably be working on the WIP I've had in progress for more than a decade. I want to finish that before I get too deep into any other big project.

I am glad to know you've had a WiP in progress for that long; it makes me feel less lonely. :)

My epic WiPs have only been going for five or six years, but I really want to get at least part of something posted.

I wish I had your focus when it comes to challenges & exchanges; I am so terrible at winning challenges that I've given up writing for other people, so if I write too slowly at least I only let myself down. I really admire people who can complete challenges and exchanges.

I make the superabundance of plot bunnies work for me: there's always a point where I get bored with the thing I'm working on/decide it's awful and terrible and a no-good idea/can't figure out what happens next. So I put it down and rotate to a different fic. Rinse, lather, repeat, and eventually I come unstuck or realize that no, the fic is good after all, and can move forward again.

Today I got some writing done, and named eight characters for a key scene I'm writing. Hopefully that means I'll be able to write more quickly tomorrow and get more done.

If I get stuck for ideas for my current project, I write one of the WiPs that needs finishing, usually the one that calls to me the most. I try to stay in the same fandom if I can, because that helps me go back to whatever I should be writing. Sometimes I switch to something completely different, and that can shake ideas loose, but it can also be distracting. For my epic WiPs, I can't switch so easily, because I have to immerse myself in the story and the world I've already written, and that takes time.
