I actually opened up the file for my Otome Youkai Zakuro fic, which I've been trying to finish since January (& mostly avoiding in favor of the other WIPs I've been electing to work on). And even wrote about 300 words! It still needs a proper ending & lots of editing, but that's more progress than I've made on it for weeks.
Every 200 words I write today is 200 words I don't have to write tomorrow. Every 200 words I write today is 200 words I don't have to write tomorrow. Every...
(I can't tell if my pacing's still off for this scene, or if it's because I'm writing so slowly at present.)
Yeah, but even if you're rewriting it, you're getting closer to having it done, y'know? I mean, I assume you're rewriting it at least partly b/c you see something that you don't think works. Would you have figured out that it didn't work w/o writing it first?
(I appreciate that sometimes rewriting just happens endlessly as a method of procrastination or fear of actually finishing a fic--I do that last one--but I'm going to assume that's not entirely the case for you!)
Would you have figured out that it didn't work w/o writing it first?
Probably not, in retrospect - it was one of those weird Socratic dialogues that occur specifically because I don't fully know what's going on (or, occasionally, because I know in far too much detail and obviously everybody in the world wants to know about the five types of Gallifreyan tea or whatever my brain's stuck on at present, so the characters must discuss it! At great length!). I certainly wouldn't have got to the new scene, which makes the same point in a much neater way for both the reader and the main character, from the earlier scene.
Ohmygod. Yesterday I spent hours making screencap collages. Today I've spent hours creating My Little Ponies on a dollmaker site. I am going to pretend that is some kind of progress, for the sake of my own sanity XD *lalalalala*
Not that I'm going to enable your not-writing, buuuut... sometimes the brain needs a break from writing! OK, maybe your collages & dollmaker stuffs are procrastination--or maybe you think they are--but... & maybe I am stretching it here: they're still creative activity, in a way! & I don't think most people can write fic ALL THE TIME--their brains would burn out. So maybe think of it as a rest period to let your creative brain recharge?
I'm answering yesterday's check in post a day late because it was one of THOSE kind of days yesterday. No chance to think let alone write, and today may not be much better, but I shall not lose hope just yet. I still would like to reach my word count goal for my Big Bang if possible -- I had a major breakthrough over the weekend, so it's actually doable in the next day or two.
:( Aw, that sucks. I hope you're able to find some time to capitalize on the huge breakthrough you had this weekend!! Drat the real world for getting in the way!!
