Discussion: exchanges. Do you participate in exchanges? What do you like about them? What do you dislike about them?

I've had a weird week as far as planning my time goes, so I've not done well at getting writing in. There's still a few hours left in the day today, we'll see if I can turn it to writing.

I participate in an exchange for New Year's/Yule -- I've enjoyed it. It gives me a chance to write outside of my usual stuff, and I enjoy doing the research and getting ideas that will fit what the recipient requests. They can be difficult, though, if the request is not well defined, or if the recipient hasn't shared much about likes/dislikes in fic. I did have one time when the recipient never commented or acknowledged the story I wrote for her, so that was pretty annoying -- but other people appreciated the story, and I liked how it turned out, too, so I let it go.

I've had a good couple of days. Wrote something pretty substantial the other day, in fact. But it's been running around bone-tired since then, and I blame the time change for that. *yawns* Just got to keep adjusting.

Exchanges are the reason I have an AO3 account, and they're great fun ... unless I accidentally get matched to a person I can't stand. (I try to be an even-handed person, but fandom's not always blue skies and butterflies, after all.) That's only happened a couple of times, though; I can usually avoid it by not offering / requesting certain fandoms if I know who's participating.
