Discussion: canon review. How important is it for you to review canon? Can you work from memory? Do you need to refresh to be certain?

I'm still on sick leave so I've been getting through the final edits of two fics today and they're just about ready to go up.

For me it totally depends on the canon that I'm workign with, for some of my fandoms I can pretty much go from memory and only consult the source to make sure I've got the right episode or characters. For others I have to review and make notes so that I keep myself right when I eventually start working on something especially if it's a what if variation of the canon events.

Life in April is still very hectic, but I'm starting to get a handle on it. I should probably try to wrap my head around some canon tonight and see if a story comes out!

In my fandoms, I have things pretty well memorized, but I still have to have a look for some of the details, especially the time line and order of events. Reviewing canon is a good way to get back into my story after a long time away, so sometimes I do it to jog my memory of what I was working on and then put aside to deal with life.

A scatterbrained day, giving myself too many things to think about, but I know I'm sitting on some good writing that's waiting to be done.

Thanks to the magic of Wikia, reviewing canon is a Hell of a lot easier than it used to be. (As much fun as I had on the Internet in the '90s, there are standards and practices that I am glad have disappeared.) Then again, fandom's also a lot more flexible about that than it used to be, too, in my experience.
