Good morning! I'm psyco_chick32 and I'll be checking in with you guys as we wrap up this month's WIP challenge!!
How's everybody doing today? Word Count? *points to icon* Is this a common thought lately? Let us know in the comments!!
Also, let's talk about Descriptive Writing.
"Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very'; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be." ~ Mark Twain.
Do you love adverbs and adjectives? Do you make an effort not to use them? Obviously, descriptors can add a lot of word padding when you're desperately trying to hit a goal (**cough** NANO **cough**) - is that a "trap" you've fallen into?

Date: Sunday, March 25th, 2012 14:45 (UTC)I love adverbs and adjectives with a relentless passion, and it's a habit I can't seem to break. So I go with it, and trust that readers who appreciate my style will like it, and accept that I can't please everybody. Of course every story is different: some are naturally bare-bones, with few descriptors, while others are positively purple! I try to let the style grow organically out of the storytelling process.

Date: Sunday, March 25th, 2012 16:40 (UTC)I can honestly say that sometimes I definitely use too many adjectives--but that's a habit I've been slowly getting myself out of for the past couple years. When I wrote my first book for my senior project I just said EVERYTHING instead of holding back and saying what was important. I like to think I've improved since then : )

Date: Sunday, March 25th, 2012 21:01 (UTC)Seriously; gimpy, scruffy Jonesy (played by Tim DeKay) combined with con-artist (and fortune-teller) Neal Caffrey in a Depression era carnival? If for no other reason than to get beyond Jonesy's absolutely deplorable tendency to fall in love with women who are either too young, too screwed up or too married. The guy's got issues, so let's throw Neal Caffrey at him! :-D

Date: Sunday, March 25th, 2012 22:49 (UTC)I am actually not sure how I am with descriptors I think I tend to place them wrongly. I am certainly using them - not sure if I am overusing but that is a good thing to keep in mind.
Tomorrow I am most likely not going to write anything as we are going to spend the whole day on our feet and when I return I am probably going to be absolutely tired and exhausted.

Okay. The thing about 'writing rules' for me, is that they're really more like 'guidelines'. You have to do when to break them. And I mean, adverbs are parts of speech for a reason. Ditto adjectives. I wouldn't want to write without either. I'd end up sounding like Hemingway, and I HATE Hemingway. :)
