Hm. It depends on how you define "involved" & "fandom." ;) I haven't been writing fic much longer than a year (or writing it seriously--there were a couple of terrible attempts several years ago that I don't speak about any more!); I've been reading it longer than that, & talking meta w/my friends for years before that as well.
What made you want to start writing fan fic in the first place?
Partly wanting in on all the fun I could see my friends who wrote fic having, but even just wanting to be in on the party wasn't going to be enough if I didn't start seeing stories I wanted to write in various fandoms. Bits & pieces of missing scenes that I wanted to make happen.
What was the first fandom for which you wrote fanfic?
The first fandom I wrote fic for that I'll admit to is Ookiku Furikabutte. It's still responsible for just over half my posted fic. I wrote a story for a year-end exchange this year in that fandom but haven't written anything since. I probably would again, if the right thing hit me!

Date: Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 04:14 (UTC)Also, yeah, it's kinda hard to figure out the *how long* part of being in a fandom. Especially if you were really fannish about something before you discovered the "official" fandom.

Date: Monday, May 16th, 2011 19:35 (UTC)How long have you been involved in fandom?
Over ten years, and I've been writing fic just as long, though not always in public. I started posting fic in LJ either in 2004 or 2005.
What made you want to start writing fan fic in the first place?
I had just fallen in love with the world, characters and stories of Star Wars and spent all my time thinking about it, and I made a Sue so I could jump in. Not the most epic way to start maybe but I never regretted it.
What was the first fandom for which you wrote fanfic?
Star Wars. They were awful Sue-stories that I used to escape from real life shit, but I had tons of fun with them.
Do you still write fic in that fandom?
I write a little in it from time to time, so yeah. However, my main fanfic passion belongs to FFVII.

Date: Monday, May 16th, 2011 20:52 (UTC)Mostly, I keep myself to my old fandom (FFVII for the last 15 years or so, HP since... 2005? and BtVS since... wow, no idea actually). I dabble in a few other fandom (Supernatural being the newest) but I'm not as active there and I don't want to get sucked up in another new fandom, because I tend to get a bit obsessed with what I like and then I get nothing else done ^^;;
Why I wanted to write? Honestly, it was for the feedback: to meet new people and make new friends. There was also the problem that I always have a lot of plot bunnies fighting themselves in my brain, and if I don't get them out, they eat my life xD
I think, the first fandom for which I wrote a fic? FFVII in 2003. But most of the fics I wrote, I have published or I took them off the web. I was, like, 17 when I wrote my first fic, and it's crap :D

Date: Monday, May 16th, 2011 21:20 (UTC)How long have you been involved in fandom?
I confess it, I have been involved in fandom for some 40 years. That should give you a hint that I am soundly middle-aged. ;-) Age has little meaning when it comes to fannish pursuits, however, so I'm not shy about that! I did not start writing serious fanfic, however, until about 10 years ago.
What made you want to start writing fan fic in the first place?
I have always enjoyed writing, and in my younger days I did some composing of stories, but never really wrote them up properly. However, I became involved in an online community for Lord of the Rings after the films came out (though I was a serious fan of the books for years and years before that). When I saw other people writing, I decided it was something I should do as well, particularly since my love for the fandom had been revitalized. I love "filling in the blanks" for scenes and stories that didn't get enough page time, and there's lots of that to be covered in LotR.
What was the first fandom for which you wrote fanfic?
My first fanfic was for Lord of the Rings, and that's pretty much all I have been writing until recently. Last year, I added to my writing interests something totally different -- anime/manga-based fanfic for Major.
Do you still write fic in that fandom?
All of my writing, except for my mult-chapter Major story, is still Lord of the Rings. I am currently working on three multi-chaptered tales in that fandom and have several one shots going as well. Not to mention several ideas on the drawing board that I refuse to start working on until the others are wrapped up! :-D

Date: Monday, May 16th, 2011 21:58 (UTC)As for the questions...
I have been involved in fandom for about ten years now. I started writing fan fic because I was reading so much bad stuff, I thought, "I can do better than this." My first fan fic was for JAG. I don't actively write in that fandom any longer, though I have several unfinished fics, one of which I absolutely want to finish and will probably end up being one my challenges here towards the fall.

Date: Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 04:12 (UTC)I feel OK.
I've been fannish since as far back as I can remember. The idea of Fandom, however, didn't occur to me til Xena (which was my first fandom.) I was Ms. Lurky Mc Lurky back then though.
It took me about ten years of reading fic and (finally) delurking to get inspired enough by a fandom (due South/C6D) to think that I could write fic too. My first fic was a Hard Core Logo (Canadian Six Degrees movie about a Canadian punk band doing a reunion tour) one.
So it happens that I *still* write both due South AND C6D. I'm not surprised about dS (the canon is a good mix of whimsy and realism) nor about C6D (it's a fandom that encompasses about 75 different Canadian tv, movies and music media--so, it's hard to get bored in it.)

Date: Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 06:39 (UTC)How long have you been involved in fandom?
Depends which series. The longest series I have been involved in is Pokemon for over five years. I have been reading/writing/reviewing fanfic, done graphic art, and talked to my friends for quite a while. The other fandoms I'm active now are Homestuck and Fullmetal Alchemist.
What made you want to start writing fan fic in the first place?
I got inspired to wanting to write fanfic after reading a few stories and I wanted to write my own. I write fanfics now because of the many plotbunnies that won't leave me alone until I write them and also writing something I want to read, haha.
What was the first fandom for which you wrote fanfic?
Technically it's The Simpsons. One website (can't remember now) I read a couple neat fanscrpits of that show and I decided to write out a couple of them (I actually had practice writing scripts when I was in high school). I didn't like the stories though, so I deleted them. D: The first story I posted is a Pokemon fic about a fisherman able to catch a fish Pokemon, but that Pokemon won't let him win. Yes, similiar to Ernest Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea. XD;
Do you still write fic in that fandom?
Pretty much on hiatus writing Pokemon fanfiction for the time being. After I finished a chaptered Pokemon fic, I was only able to write out a few short one shots. I still get a few ideas for Pokemon stories here and there, so hopefully I'll be able to get to writing Pokemon fanfiction again. Now at the moment my plot ideas are gearing towards the FMA fandom, so I'm rolling with that because again PLOTBUNNIES.

Date: Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 07:14 (UTC)I'm pretty new to fandom, actually. I started reading fics maybe four or five years ago and always wished I could do more to participate, but I hated writing and didn't have any ideas anyways, so I never bothered. Then about a year and a half ago, I discovered the FFVII anonymous kink meme and saw a prompt that interested me and I wrote it expecting to never write anything again. And it all snowballed from there.
Although, now that I think about it, the first fandom I ever wrote fic for was Black Beauty when I was in grade four. It was a terrible story wherein Merrylegs was spelled a variety of ways and Black Beauty was rescued from all the terrible things by a wonderful Mary Sue and they went to live happily ever after with all the other horses. Now I'm a bit shocked that I've been a fangirl since grade four.
So, FFVII was the first fandom I wrote something readable for and it's all I do. I keep thinking I should branch out (at least to other pairings, come on!) and maybe someday I will. Maybe.

Needless to say, this has not left a lot of time for fic writing, since selling things will earn me money and fic writing unfortunately does not. OTOH, all of this TV watching while I am making stuff means I have ample opportunity to for a White Collar canon rewatch after I finish this current Criminal Minds season... (talk about mood whiplash there) Also, there's that beta I need to do, which I will do in the morning once I get some sleep.
Okay, about me!
I've kind of lurked in fandom--reading fic and such--since I was about 13 or so, so 10 years now. (That makes me feel old. o.O) Mostly I hung out on message boards and stuff and lurked around reading fic. I started going to anime cons when I was 15, and now attend several cons a year, mostly in California. I did a short stint of message-board rp when I was 14, but I first really started getting creatively involved in fandom 3 years ago when I started playing Mio Hongo (from Skip Beat!) in a Livejournal freeplay RP.
It sounds really stupid, but I first started wanting to write fic because it seems like all of my friends online are writers in one form or another. I'd see the fic they were writing and posting and I wanted to at least see if I could write stories of my own. I've always enjoyed world-building, but I'd never really contemplated writing stories with the characters and worlds I came up with before.
My first fic was for Yami no Matsuei, I think, about 8 years ago. It was terrible and it has since been lost to the ether of old hard drives. Since then, I've written about half a dozen little ficlets, mostly in the last couple years, but they've all been original work. I've never really written "real" fanfic before. Even the fanfic I'm working on features an original character pretty heavily.

Date: Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 11:38 (UTC)How long have you been involved in fandom? I have been lurking in online fandom for 4-5 years but only active reached out in this year.
What made you want to start writing fan fic in the first place?
I'm in a small fandom and you pretty much need to write what you want to read, so.
What was the first fandom for which you wrote fanfic?
Marvel comics fandom. It's responsible for the majority of what I write.
Do you still write fic in that fandom?
Yes.

Date: Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 13:04 (UTC)How long have you been involved in fandom?
I have been interested in fandom since I was 10, but I've been involved for about five years now.
What made you want to start writing fan fic in the first place?
Sometimes I didn't like how TV shows/books ended, or I could imagine scenarios that would never be part of the main storyline. Plus I loved writing in general, but I couldn't really flesh out my own original characters.
What was the first fandom for which you wrote fanfic?
I first wrote fanfic for Pokemon. That soon turned into a Pokemon/Yuyu Hakusho/Inuyasha AU series that (thankfully) never saw the light of day. The first published work I did (as far as FF.Net is concerned) was something for Yuyu Hakusho.... It was terrible. Absolutely terrible. But I was just starting, so I guess I can't be too critical of myself?
Do you still write fic in that fandom?
No, I don't. I can't say that "I grew out of it" or anything--I just found several new fandoms that I felt more comfortable with. Now I write fanfic for the Broadway musical Wicked (specifically for the Gelphie pairing) and some Kristin Chenoweth/Idina Menzel (or Chenzel). I have posted some things for The West Wing and Moulin Rouge, but Wicked is what I'm more focused on. I wish I could write for more fandoms, but I'm always afraid that I'll never get the characterizations or the situations down perfectly.
(I've been lurking here for about 2+ weeks. Sorry I haven't replied before!)
