Monday's here and with it, a whole new day to talk about our goal fics. :)
OK, and now, for today's questions: are the majority of your fics based on one genre? Do you ever write a genre that'd be considered the reverse of that? Is there a genre you wish you could try out but haven't?

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 01:59 (UTC)It's really nice to have that queer_fest fic done and off to the beta now because it gives me space to work on this other fic now. I can worry about what changes I might need to make when it comes back and see if I can't get some good progress on this during the week. Well, I have work tomorrow, but I can make notes in my email and such. :P
I tend to cross genres more than stick to specific ones. Writing about old bands could be considered 'historical', and I've done some steampunk, science fiction, time travel, horror, urban fantasy, BDSM, LGBTI/queer/transgender, dystopian, zombie apocalypse, fantasy, all sorts of things. Smut counts too, right? XD Doing AU bingo last time did at least make me try my hand at detective fic, and even if it was an exercise in puns and not that serious, it was still fun to write. Don't know if I'll try it again though.
ALSO. Still totally need to have a go at a Western. Last year's NaNo was supposed to be a Georgian Steampunk Western, but the Western kind of got left out as I kept writing. So maybe we'll have another go at a Western some time, just to say I've done it.

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 02:46 (UTC)I don't think I've ever done Western either. But then, for me, it's more a matter of following my plot bunnies rather than sitting down and thinking "OK, now I'm going to write a sci-fi fic". Funnily enough, there IS a canonical Western sub-fandom under one of my two main fandoms. I've yet to get a plot bunny for it, though. *pouts*

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 03:40 (UTC)IDK, I was a bit like that too, but AU bingo gave me all sorts of interesting ideas for genres/AUs I hadn't tried yet so I was wiling to go for it. I think it's easier to experiment with new genres with something like a bingo card because it's only one fic for a bingo, rather than, say, sitting down and deciding you're going to write zombies today. Or something. IDK, it works for me, and I don't see the harm in trying a new genre at least once, just to see if it's any fun and if it's something I'm any good at. But if the plot bunny's not there, it is harder to write. That's possibly why I threw so much crack and humour into my detective fic. I didn't think I had the ~smarts~ to write a proper detective story. I can't plot like that, but I can write puns, so puns won out. :D

Much to my surprise, I once wrote a mini-series (three ficlets) set in a zombie'verse. Mind you, I'm terrified of zombies (DNW at all!). But I wrote them for one of my BFFs (and she loved them so, win!) The crack part was that there was only 1 zombie in the whole mini-series (and she was destroyed.)

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 03:27 (UTC)My fics are almost exclusively based on one genre (and one fandom within that genre), and I hardly ever go out of it because I'm very comfortable there! Within that genre, my writings tend to be AU. I have recently ventured into writing in the sports genre (thanks to my love of a certain anime/manga series), and it's been quite fun. I suppose that's pretty much the opposite of my usual! I have toyed with the idea of doing some science fiction (specifically Star Trek), but haven't taken the plunge as yet.

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 04:12 (UTC)I guess most of my writing tends to be in fandoms that are based on classic literature -- Romeo & Juliet, and I wrote one in Northanger Abbey (Jane Austen) for Yuletide last year -- so they're historical fiction for me to write, even though they were contemporary when they were written by the original authors, since I do not live in Shakespearean or Regency England. But then I've written in 10th Kingdom, which is fairy tale/fantasy, and also 30 Rock which is . . . crackfic, pretty much by virtue of the show's nature. My original fiction tends to be historical fantasy romance.
So, historical fiction, I guess? But also a little fantastical sometimes. And I like drama! Melodrama, some might say. :P
As for genres I'd like to write in, is "finished" a genre? It really should be!

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 06:29 (UTC)I think the main things I've written have been... I dunno. My fandoms tend to be anime/manga ones about high school-aged people. Sometimes w/baseball. Sometimes w/spirits. (& no... no crossovers between the two, b/c... no. Besides, I am sadly not a crack fic writer.)

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 11:30 (UTC)Yes, my fics are all primarily romantic in nature. Even PWP tend to be more romantic in nature than just getting down and dirty. There are the occasional other genres, but not often.

Date: Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 16:30 (UTC)As for me, I have been writing in all shorts of genres. One I didn't expect to like until recently is romance because I tried it a couple of times for prompts relating to that and those didn't go so well. XD; However, I learned my mistakes and I'm able to get an idea how I want the romance play out in my stories. My latest TOO MANY FRAGMENTED SCENES work in progress story is going to be part romance and I think I'm doing that decently because I'm letting the characters drive the romance, not the other way around.
